Dance for Fitness and Wellbeing

Let’s make some moves! Join us and be part of our accessible and diverse dance and wellbeing programme.
These weekly classes will be an opportunity for you to learn and be inspired by different dance styles: Indian dance, 70s disco, social dance, Caribbean and street dance.
The programme is designed to improve your fitness and wellbeing over 12 weeks, overseen by expert instructors from internationally-acclaimed dance company Rambert.
Who is this for?
This class is open to everyone over the age of 16, although we have designed the course for people who want to improve their fitness and wellbeing over a number of weeks. It is particularly suitable for people who have retired and those with disabilities or health conditions living in Redbridge. No prior experience of dance is necessary – these workshops are designed to be fun and accessible for all skill levels.
What is the format of the workshops?
Each week there are two hour-long sessions: the first hour is for people who prefer chair-based exercise, and the second is a standing class for people with a wider range of mobility. Carers, assistants, friends and family are also welcome (and encouraged!) to take part. If you’re not sure which class is for you, please email us at access@colours.red to discuss your requirements.
- Thursday 5th September, Caribbean – this session will explore styles such as Carnival, Soca, Dancehall and more
- Thursday 12th September, 70s Disco – a fun and energetic session exploring dance styles of the 1970s, using music from this time
- Thursday 19th September, Indian – this session will explore styles such as Bollywood, Bhangra and Kathak
- Thursday 26th September, Street Dance – a fun and energetic session specialising in funk styles, locking and popping
- Thursday 3rd October, Indian – this session will explore styles such as Bollywood, Bhangra and Kathak
- Thursday 10th October, Social Dance – this session will explore dance styles such as the Lindy Hop, the Jive, Rock ‘n’ Roll, Waltz and Swing
The first six weeks will be run as taster sessions where you can try out the different styles. The remaining six sessions will focus on the most popular style(s) and will work towards a final showcase where you will perform as a group (optional, not required).
Please wear clothes you are comfortable moving in, such as loose clothing and flat shoes / trainers.
What will I get out of it?
You will learn a variety of different dance styles, taught by some of the best experts in the UK. During the course, we hope you see a measurable improvement in your overall health and wellbeing. Plus you will get to meet new people and work towards a final showcase at the end of the project, where your friends and family can come to watch.
