Dance for Fitness and Wellbeing

Event Image

Our accessible and diverse dance programme is back! Join us on the dance floor to learn some moves, feel better and meet new people.

Last year, people who took part felt their fitness and wellbeing was better by the end of the course, and they felt stronger, healthier and more confident in their lives.

These weekly classes are an opportunity for you to be inspired by different dance styles, tell us which ones you like the most, and then practise your favourite style to perform at a final showcase. The programme is designed to improve your fitness and wellbeing over 10 weeks, and is overseen by expert instructors from internationally acclaimed dance company, Rambert.

Who is this for?

This class is open to everyone over the age of 16, although we have designed the course for people who want to improve their fitness and wellbeing over a number of weeks. It is particularly suitable for people who have retired and those with disabilities or health conditions living in Redbridge. No prior experience of dance is necessary – these workshops are designed to be fun and accessible for all skill levels. It is suitable for all backgrounds and for both men and women.

What is the format of the workshops?

This year we are hosting workshops in Ilford (Kenneth More Theatre) on Thursday mornings, and Chadwell Heath (Marjorie Collins Centre) on Thursday afternoons. At each location there are two sessions: the first hour is for people who prefer chair-based exercise, and the second hour is a standing class for people with a wider range of mobility. Carers, assistants, friends and family are also welcome (and encouraged!) to take part. If you’re not sure which class is for you, please email us at access@colours.red to discuss your requirements.

  • Thursday 2nd October, Caribbean – this session will explore styles such as Carnival, Soca, Dancehall and more
  • Thursday 9th October,  70s Disco – a fun and energetic session exploring dance styles of the 1970s, using music from this time
  • Thursday 16th October,  Indian – this session will explore styles such as Bollywood, Bhangra and Kathak
  • Thursday 23rd October, Line Dance – a fun session following a choreographed sequence of steps, a social and low impact style of dance
  • Thursday 30th October, Ballroom (TBC)
  • Thursday 6th, 13th, 20th and 27th November and 4th December – you choose the styles to practise!

The first five weeks will be run as taster sessions where you can try out the different styles. The remaining five sessions will focus on the most popular style(s) and will work towards a final showcase where you will perform as a group (optional, not required).

Please wear clothes you are comfortable moving in, such as loose clothing and flat shoes / trainers. Please bring a refillable water bottle.

What will I get out of it?

You will learn a variety of different dance styles, taught by some of the best experts in the UK. During the course, you are likely to see a measurable improvement in your overall health and wellbeing. Plus you will get to meet new people and work towards a final showcase at the end of the project, where your friends and family can come to watch.
