On Thursday 10 April, we hosted ‘Rediscover Redbridge’ at Redbridge Town Hall and surrounding spaces…
Behind the Scenes: Celebrating Our Projects in 2024
As 2024 comes to a close, it’s time to get a ‘behind the scenes’ view of the incredible moments that brought our communities together this year. From cultural celebrations to creative workshops, this year’s projects have been nothing short of extraordinary. Thanks to our dedicated Community Producers, Community Engagement Officers, volunteers, artists and the amazing people of Redbridge, these events weren’t just activities—they were experiences filled with connection, creativity, and joy. Everything was made for people of Redbridge, by people of Redbridge.
Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at the standout events that shaped this year’s journey!
Cultural Food Festival: A Feast for the Soul
Food connects us all, and this festival did just that! The event came alive with delicious dinners and musical performances by talented graduates from ELAM arts college, adding rhythm to the flavours. Held at the newly opened Mercato Metropolitano, we didn’t just share recipes; we shared stories. Through drawings and personal reflections, participants explored the deep ties between food and culture. It wasn’t just about cooking—it was about coming together as a community.
“The event allowed people to connect authentically, learning why food holds meaning across different walks of life.”
– Jordan, Community Engagement Officer
Stitch Your Style: Threads of Connection
This 10-week fashion workshop became a hub of teamwork and friendship. Participants collaborated on garment designs, offering each other ideas and encouragement. The crowning glory wasn’t just the catwalk but the scrapbook capturing these precious memories, reflecting a sense of community and achievement.
“It was so exciting to see people helping each other—it felt like they had done it all together!”
– Jordan, Community Engagement Officer
Murals: Painting Redbridge’s Story
Street art met community storytelling in this vibrant project. From local schools to care homes, everyone had their say in shaping the murals, resulting in unexpected and delightful designs—like trees with ears! This co-design approach showed that art truly belongs to the people.
“Who would have thought we’d end up with murals of trees with ears? That’s the magic of co-design.”
– Jordan, Community Engagement Officer
Tuck Art: A Splash of Culture by the Lake
Fairlop Waters transformed into a canvas of South Asian artistry, with treasure chests, barrels, and vibrant parasols adorning the space. At the heart of it all was a stunning South Asian truck, radiating colour and culture. Participants added their personal touch by designing mugs, coasters, and frames inspired by their own stories.
“Our group created something truly special, bringing together cultural identity and creativity.”
– Ruby, Community Engagement Officer
Kite Making Project: Soaring Spirits
The summer skies above Hainault Forest came alive with kites of every shape and size, from intricate Indian fighter kites to dazzling trapezium designs. Hundreds gathered to marvel at this kaleidoscope of colour and movement, showcasing the artistry and spirit of our community.
“The kite display was nothing short of spectacular—an expression of joy and creativity.”
– Ruby, Community Engagement Officer
Lantern Parade: Lighting Up the Night
As summer faded, our Lantern Parade illuminated Ken Aston Square. Inspired by Warli art, participants crafted lanterns that told their stories, representing our community’s shared heritage. The parade was a radiant celebration of culture, creativity, and togetherness.
“The lanterns lit up the night, reflecting the beauty of our diverse community.”
– Ruby, Community Engagement Officer
Language Café: A Celebration of Words and Culture
From Kolam patterns in Tamil to Henna art and BSL finger-spelling, the Language Café wasn’t just about words—it was about understanding. Participants embraced new languages and cultures while enjoying the themed drinks and snacks, making this a space where curiosity thrived.
“The café fostered connection and curiosity, blending language with creative expression.”
– Lisa, Community Engagement Officer
Streets of Colour: Flags of Friendship
Set against the picturesque backdrop of Valentines Park, this event brought community-designed flags to life. Each flag told a story, symbolising hope, friendship, and unity. As they fluttered in the wind, they painted a picture of all that is good in our community.
“The flags represented stories of hope and togetherness—a beautiful celebration of our community spirit.”
– Lisa, Community Engagement Officer
Dance for Fitness and Wellbeing: Moving Together
What started as a fitness project turned into a vibrant celebration of joy and resilience. Over 12 weeks, participants mastered choreography in diverse dance styles, building friendships along the way. The grand flashmob performance at Ilford’s Exchange was a testament to their commitment and confidence, transforming the space into a joyful dance floor.
“Watching the joy on their faces as they performed to over 1,000 people was unforgettable.”
– Lisa, Community Engagement Officer
From food and fashion to art and dance, 2024 has been a year of creativity, collaboration, and community. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who participated, from the talented artists and dedicated venues to the amazing community groups and individuals who made it all possible.
