Fairlop Waters Mural

A colourful new mural at Fairlop Waters celebrates local cultures, childhood memories and the many ways people connect with Fairlop Waters, from a couple’s sunset stroll to a exciting school sailing trip and even a family wedding.

Created through Colours of Redbridge and commissioned by the London Borough of Redbridge, the artwork is part of wider improvements to make Fairlop Waters more welcoming and wildlife‑friendly. Residents shared their stories in community workshops, which artist Ginny Barlow transformed into a lively design featuring a South Asian mandala sunset, British folk‑art borders and floral details.

The design process and installation has been overseen by mural artist Auberi Chen from Watching Paint Dry Productions. Alongside his expert team, he led workshops with local residents to paint elements of the mural and create an additional community-led legacy to the project.

You’ll find the mural on the side of Owls Play Centre, right by the Boathouse – the first thing many visitors see. It’s free to enjoy any time, and the team hopes it encourages people to use the space, feel at home and spot the tiny details inspired by real community memories.
